Two New Words

Reading Wanderer On My Native Shore: A Personal Guide and Tribute to the Ecology of the Atlantic Coast, by George Reiger, I learned two new words today: littoral and pelagic.

Littoral refers to a coastal region: the beach, marshes, and the ecology of such areas. Pelagic refers to the open ocean, and the birds, fish, and mammals that live in or on the open ocean.
